How Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) and EPS Pension Work in India
For formal sector salaried employees in India, the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is mandatory for establishments with 20 or more employees. Managed by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), it creates a disciplined, dual-contribution retirement corpus.
1. How Your 12% and Employer's 12% Are Split
- Your Employee Contribution (12%): 100% of your 12% deduction goes straight into your EPF account.
- Employer's Contribution (12%):
• 8.33% goes to Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), capped at a maximum of ₹1,250/month (based on the statutory ₹15,000 wage ceiling).
• 3.67% (plus any excess over ₹1,250) goes directly into your EPF account.
2. How is Monthly EPS Pension Calculated?
Upon reaching 58 years of age and completing at least 10 years of pensionable service, you become eligible for a lifelong monthly pension under the formula:
Note: Pensionable salary is currently capped at ₹15,000 under EPFO rules for standard EPS members.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is EPF interest taxable above ₹2.5 Lakh annual contribution?
Yes. Since the Finance Act 2021, if an employee's annual EPF + VPF contribution exceeds ₹2.5 Lakhs in a financial year (in companies where the employer also contributes), the interest earned on the excess contribution is subject to tax as per the individual's income tax slab.
Can I withdraw EPF before retirement?
Partial withdrawals are permitted for specific life events such as buying/constructing a home, higher education, daughter/son marriage, or critical medical emergencies. If you remain unemployed for 2 months, 100% withdrawal is allowed.
